Learning outcomes

The learner - has an understanding of the strategies, techniques, tools (both traditional and advanced) and methods used in specialised translation - s/he is able to apply them in the translation of texts belonging to several genres and text types, both technical/scientific and for the publishing industry, on paper, electronic and multimedia support, between English and Italian, responding to specific translation briefs - s/he is aware of and able to use documentation, writing, editing and revision techniques - s/he is able to choose and apply the advanced translation strategies that seem to best respond to the communicative and operative functions of the source texts.

Course contents

Technical / scientific translation module Prof. E. Wiesmann (active translation)

The module aims to introduce students to legal translation and in particular to the translation of the most frequently requested legal documents (contracts, memorandum and articles of association, etc.) which will be carried out with the aid of the most appropriate tools. Students will learn about the specific cultural, sectorial and linguistic characterization of these texts and how to give due weight to textual and extra-textual factors which determine the context of translation and translation methods. Particular attention will be given to strategies for acquiring the sectorial knowledge necessary for the understanding and translation of legal texts and mastery of the language.

Technical / scientific translation module Prof. B. Persico (passive translation)

The module aims to increase expertise in dealing with the translation of highly specialized texts drawn from various fields such as, for example, economics, architecture, medical studies and musicology. Students will learn about the specific cultural, sectorial and linguistic characterization of these texts and how to give due weight to textual and extra-textual factors which determine the context of translation and translation methods. Particular attention will be given to strategies for acquiring the specialized knowledge necessary for the understanding and translation of specialized texts and mastery of the language.

Translation for Publishing Module Prof. B. Persico (passive translation)

The rhetorical and stylistic features of texts will be explored from literature, essays, journalism, both print and electronic media. The students will train to produce texts at a high formal and rhetorical level, aiming to reach standards for publication. Typical problems of creativity in translation will be addressed.

Multimedia Translation Module Prof. B. Persico (passive translation)

The module aims to provide students with the theoretical support and tools to perform the appropriate language translation for subtitling of feature films, in particular with regards to the genre of comedy. After an in-depth exploration of the issues and strategies relating to translation in subtitling, we will proceed with the translation and subtitling of two feature films based on the comic books of the German author Ralf König.

Teaching methods

Technical / scientific translation module Prof. E. Wiesmann (active translation)

The translations will be performed in part individually at home, and in part under the monitoring of the teacher in small groups of two to four students in a classroom equipped with print and electronic resources for legal translators. Before being discussed in class, the translations will be reviewed by the teacher. Students should carry out preparatory work for translation, including the preparation of glossaries which will document the results of their terminology and phraseology research.

Technical / scientific translation module Prof B. Persico (translation passive)

Particular emphasis will be given to the translation carried out in small groups of two to four students with the help of computer and paper resources and electronic equipment under monitoring by the teacher. As there will be several translation variants, special attention will be given also to the revision of the translation by small groups of students within the parameters prescribed for quality and attention to consistency in terminological and stylistic choices.

Translation for publishing module Prof B. Persico (passive translation)

There will be a translation workshop on a real project. Students will work on real projects. The text types chosen will be articles and essays, journalistic reports and literary texts. Importance will also be given to a theoretical reflection on the role of translation as a process of intercultural mediation.

Multimedia translation module Prof B. Persico (passive translation)

The translation of the script will be broken down into scenes for groups of two or three students, monitored by the teacher, with the consistent and parallel vision of the film images. The major problems of translation will be recorded and discussed in a plenary session together with solutions proposed by each group. The final assembly of the subtitles will be based on the groups submissions using a special computer program.

The translations done during the lesson will be monitored by the teacher who will discuss them with the students. Individual learning will be assessed by an appraisal of translations carried out individually at home and by interim tests. All students will undergo a final test.

Technical / scientific translation module Prof B. Persico (passive translation)

There will be an individual final test consisting of a translation of a text taken from one of the scientific / technical domains which have been analyzed during the course.

Translation for publishing module Prof B. Persico (passive translation)

The course consists of continuous practice, both individually and in small groups, with related ongoing evaluations. There will also be a final test.

The assessment will be continuous, based on the work of small groups. There will also be an individual final test.

Students will carry out their translation work in equipped classrooms with the help of print and electronic resources, as well as the most suitable programms and translation tools. All the material in the module will be made available in electronic format via the e-learning platform.

Computer work stations with Internet access, online databases, print and electronic dictionaries, video projectors for PC. The material of the module (source texts, translations, glossaries) will be made available to students on the e-learning platform.

Translation for publishing module Prof R. Persico (passive translation)

Students will use the major general and specialized electronic dictionaries provided by the teacher, projector for PC.

Multimedia translation module Prof B. Persico (translation passive)

Students will use computer work stations with Internet access, paper-based and electronic dictionaries, a DVD player and a specific program for the insertion of subtitles into film images.
