Learning outcomes

The course studies the main issues of the sociology of communication, from interpersonal communication to mass media, with particular reference to the symbolic dynamics that can be found in the representations of the socio-political fenomena. At the end of the course, the student has learnt the fundamental theoretical and methodological tools for analysing and interpreting the communication processes in contemporary society.

Course contents

First section: the structure of the communicative relationship; the communication process; the functions of communication; the forms of communication; the noise; networks and institutions of communication; fields of communication. 

Second section: analysis of a sociosemiotic research on multiculturalism; translation, cultural transduction and quality; interculturality and multiculturality; pragmatics and interpretation; imaginary, culture, mith, fiction; towards a sociosemiotic anthropology of fiction and media.

Teaching methods

The course will be based mostly on traditional lecturing. The teaching will also be open to student partecipation and presentation of papers.

Grades are based on two written examinations during the term and a final oral examination.
