28011 - Logic Design T

Academic Year 2011/2012

  • Docente: Giovanni Neri
  • Credits: 6
  • SSD: ING-INF/05
  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Computer Engineering (cod. 0926)

Learning outcomes

Binary arithmetic. Combinatorial logical networks: synthesis, analysis, minimization. Basic combinatorial integrated networks and memories. Sequential logical networks: formal synthesis. Asynchronous sequential logical networks: direct and FF based synthesis . Synchronous sequential logical networks: analysis and  synthesis. Most important synchronous logical networks: FFD, shift registers, counters etc. Integrated circuits based synthesis. All subjects will use a FPGA integrated  design/test system.

Course contents

Binary arithmetic. Combinatorial networks: truth tables, canonical forms, elementary combinatorial circuits (coders, decoders, multiplexers, ROM etc.), networks minimization. Sequential networks: state diagrams, transition tables, minimization and network synthesis, Asynchronous sequential networks: synthesis methodologies and implementation problems. Synchronous sequential networks: general structure, FF, FF based synthesis, elementary synchronous circuits (counters, shift register, random numers generators etc.)

Assessment methods

A written exam and an oral exam. A  positive mark of the  written exam is  necessary for the oral exam. The complete rules can be found on http://gneri.deis.unibo.it  (from January 2010)

Teaching tools

Lectures slides, recorded lectures, web based live lectures broadcast (with possible remote interaction), exam papers with solutions. All information on http://gneri.deis.unibo.it site (from January 2010). On the same same will be available for download the FPGA design system of Altera.
