Learning outcomes

The course is intended to acquire updated knowledge on epidemiology, clinical features, pathophysiological mechanisms and clinical management of the main functional digestive diseases

Course contents

Program

 

  1. Pathophysiological notes 

 

·         Digestive functions and their main control mechanisms

- Enteric nervous system (ENS)

- Interstitial cells of  Cajal

- Smooth muscle cells 

·         Neuromuscular patological conditions

 

  1. Main functional digestive diseases  

 

·         Functional heartburn

·         Functional dyspepsia

·         Irritable bowel syndrome  

·         Idiopathic cronic constipation

·         Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction

Readings/Bibliography

The final exam will focus on subjects discussed during the course that are summarized in copies of the main slides that are available on request. These should be integrated with some articles of the recent literature that can also be obtained during the course

Teaching methods

 

Interactive discussion is encouraged during lectures

 

Practical exercises will be fully organized by the students, the teacher acting as a stimulus for discussion and adviser for scientific presentations

Assessment methods

A multiple choice test must be passed at the end of the course

Teaching tools

The course will  be based on presentations with powerpoint slides
