At the end of the course the student will get both a general overview of the history of the modern concept of citizenship and an overview of some of the most important contemporary debates on the trasformations of citizenship in the framework of globalization processes. He or she will be acquainted with the findamental issues at stake in international debates in the field of political theory. In particular, he or she will be able to crtically assess continuities and discontinuities between the modern conception of citizenship and the new emergin assemblages of authority, territory, and rights and to analyze the tensions between citizenship and human rights, with  particular reference to  the problems and challanges posited by contemporary migratory movements.

Course contents

The course is divided into three parts. The first part aims at showing how the formation of the Western modern concept of citizenship has been historically and theoretically shaped by the establishment of precise borders of citizenship itself: through a detailed reading of classical texts, some of these borders and the inclusion/exclusion mechanisms related to them will be critically highlighted and discussed. The second part of the course will focus on the relation between migration, globalization and citizenship in contemporary world. A third part of the course will focus on the debates on migration within the field of political philosophy, with specific references to the issue of political subjectivity and to the theory of justice.
Students that take the course for 6 credits can limit themsleves to attend the classes of the first or of the last two parts.
