Learning outcomes

After the course, the student will acquire the knowledge of: -structure and properties of principal pollutants; -principles and tools of sustainable chemistry; - methods for a sustainable use and production of chemicals, energy sources and feedstocks.

Course contents

The 12 principles of Green chemistry. Goals and tools of green chemistry. The "Presidential green chemistry challenge award".Green metrics: the concepts of "Atom economy", "Environmental factor" and other factors of green reactions.

Renewable feedstock.

Evaluation of structural features that determine the interaction of organica molecules with the environment: distribution among different environmental comparts; the meaning of persistence anf environmental life time span of organic compounds.

Main classes of organic pollutants. Effects on the enviroment of organic compounds pollution.

New products from green chemistry. Synthetic methodologies and reagents for green chemistry. Green solvents. Alternative energetic sources in chemistry.

Alternative chemical energy sources: Biofuels, Biomass, Fuel cells
