Course contents

The Finns and the Hungarians in the context of Finno-Ugric culture

Finnish and Hungarian culture will be examined from a comparative point of view, in relation to that of the other Finno-Ugrians too. Basic linguistic knowledge will be provided, with comparisons of the languages of other related peoples. The elements characterizing the world vision of the ancient Finns and Hungarians will be singled out, as reflected in the tradition, myth and popular and refined literature. In particular, an analysis will be made of the main themes and characters of the Kalevala, and the symbolism connected with the shamanic system of beliefs will be highlighted.
