Learning outcomes

Students will acquire the fundamentals of linguistics. They will understand the phonological systems of the major European languages and will be able to analyze complex words and sentential structures. They are supposed also to know the main semantic and syntactic relations between words, linguistic typology and the principles of linguistic change.

Course contents

The course aims at giving to the students the basics of synchronic and diachronic linguistics. Particular attention will be given to phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. Typology of languages and linguistic change will also be discussed.

A useful dictionary of linguistics (in Italian) is:

G.L. Beccaria (ed.), Dizionario di linguistica e di filologia, metrica, retorica, Einaudi, Torino.

Teaching methods

Theoretical background and empirical data will be presented in each class. In particular, classed deovoted to phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics data from the major European languages will be presented and analyzed.

Assessment methods

There will be a written test consisting of 10 open questions based on the course's program and on the textbook. Some of the test items will be practical exercises (analyses of complex-words and phrase structures).
