Festival- Sounds of the World

Unibo Team Leader:Prof. Domenico Staiti, Dipartimento di Musica e Spettacolo-MUSPE

Suoni dal Mondo, an international Festival dedicated to ethnic music created in 1990, will reach its 19th edition in 2008. Nico Staiti, associate professor of Ethnomusicology and History of Musical Instruments at the University of Bologna’s Dipartimento di Musica e Spettacolo, has been its Artistic director since 2004. Beginning from its very establishment, the Suoni dal Mondo foundation has obtained the economic support of the Ministry for Arts and Culture and the sponsorship of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in recognition of the high artistic and scholarly quality of its initiatives, as well as for the outstanding international nature of its programs and activities.
On 29 May 2006, UNESCO proclaimed Bologna a "city of music", "first among Italian cities and second in Europe only to Seville", "recognition awarded by the Global Alliance, a United Nations program dedicated to valorising cultural diversity and its most significant manifestations ".

The most important among the elements that led to this recognition was precisely the Suoni dal Mondo Festival.  Suoni dal Mondo is currently the only European Festival of oral tradition music produced and organized directly by a university research institution. The close ties between university research in ethnomusicology and actual performances set this festival apart from all other European initiatives of the same kind: the greater part of Suoni dal Mondo’s concerts are original productions of musical genres never before heard on the stage; in this way elements of local or minority culture, previously unheard, are put into circulation at the disposal of the European audience.
