Italy as an international scientific centre for research on ageing

Age-it represents the first integrated and interdisciplinary effort at national level and aims to make Italy a leader in ageing research, by bringing together researchers from social, biomedical and technological sciences.

The project analyses and offers new solutions to make the lives of elderly people more inclusive and of higher quality, by examining all the areas involved, from demography to health care, from technology to social policy.

The work carried out to date by the university research teams in this project includes:

  • in-depth study of the demographic dynamics of population ageing, examining factors such as longevity, fertility, family life and migration
  • developing prototypes for monitoring the ageing of the population, useful for guiding future policies and making demographic projections in terms of households, labour force participation and care needs
  • conducting biomedical research to identify biomarkers of ageing, contributing to the understanding of frailty and age-related diseases

What activities are in progress?

  • on the care front, technological solutions are being developed to support caregivers: a platform is being developed to monitor the well-being of caregivers and provide training on how to improve care for the elderly
