Description
The Master's course in Advanced Spectroscopy in Chemistry is a two-year (120 ECTS) programme, taught and administrated in English leading to the award of joint/multiple degrees within five universities: Alma Mater University of Bologna, University of Lille (coordinator), Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Leipzig University and University of Helsinki. The ASC network offers a tailor-made curriculum to excellent students willing to acquire state of the art knowledge in spectroscopy for chemistry. Students are provided with high level supervision and training as well as access to a unique variety of laboratories and research-grade equipment that are usually not accessible at this level. It prepares students to develop scientific and intercultural skills towards doctoral studies and/or industrial careers in chemical analysis and characterization, in fields ranging from biology to material science through molecular or atmospheric chemistry and catalysis. The ASC Master's course also provides all students with various transferable skills: competencies in entrepreneurship, project management, bibliographical search and synthesis in link with industry. Indeed, over the years, the ASC Consortium has developed links with industrial partners (Brüker, BASF, ENI) as well as with regional competitiveness clusters (MATIKEM, NEU). These non-academic actors are committed to deliver their knowledge and advise our students in building their study path, in order to develop their career. During the 2 years of the programme many activities are organized (integration week, internships and laboratory work, welcome workshop, winter schools) and students have many opportunities to acquire other soft skills such as intercultural and scientific communication, enabling them to easily adapt to their future international professional environment. The ASC consortium also developed a privileged partnership with large scale facilities such as SOLEIL (France), ELETTRA (Italy) and SOLARIS (Poland). These partners, at the cutting-edge of the spectroscopic techniques, will help us keeping our standards of excellence in terms of course contents. New non-EU academic partners have joined the consortium as associated partners (Karazin Kharkiv National University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Lebanese American University, Universidade Estadual Paulista Julio de Mesquita Filho) in order to promote our program worldwide and to strengthen strategic partnerships with non-EU institutions with a long-term vision of joint degrees between our HEIs and our partners. Since it first opened, 242 students from 52 countries have enrolled in the course. 78% of the ASC graduates have continued onto fully funded PhD schemes, mainly in European universities, while 19% directly integrated the job market after graduation. L’Oréal Paris R&D (Paris and Shanghai), Merck KGaA – Milipore, Agilent, Novartis, BASF, Darmstadt, Germany, Reckitt Benckiser, Hull, UK, among others, chose to hire ASC alumni.
