Programme profile

Graduates from the Degree Programme in Languages, Markets and Cultures of Asia will have a good linguistic grounding and knowledge of the main socio-economic and cultural phenomena concerning their countries of choice. The geographical areas in question differ according to the Asian or Mediterranean African language chosen: for the first area the reference languages are Chinese and Japanese; for the second they are Arabic and Persian. Language-wise, the learning curriculum includes studying a European language chosen from those on the Degree Programmes teaching catalogue.

Among the skills a graduate will have acquired are a good level of comparative analysis applied to the main phenomena of the respective social systems and intercultural communication dynamics; a grounding in the theory and analysis of current processes in business, markets and the economic system; an ability to apply multi-disciplinary knowledge to the issues of sustainable development and globalization, as well as familiarity with the main socio-economic statistical sources.

This multi- and interdisciplinary education will enable graduates to interact successfully with the countries in question, e.g. with public and private organizations, educational and training institutes, companies and other settings calling for language and cultural mediation.

The curriculum is also geared to a career in the field of international relations (relations with overseas, working for overseas branches of Italian firms and/or foreign firms' branches in Italy); collaboration with international organizations; managing national and/or international projects and structures (in and outside Europe) which call not only for language/cultural expertise but notions of law, economics and sociology; linguistic consultancy in economic, legal and cultural spheres, as well as publishing and journalism.

Carrying out some of the above-mentioned jobs at a higher level of independence and responsibility may require further training via internships, professional post-graduate training courses or first-level university Masters, which graduates in Languages, Markets and Cultures of Asia will be able to follow with their acquired methodological skills and ability to pursue their own areas of learning in greater depth.

International mobility

Erasmus+ is a programme promoted by the EU which offers students the opportunity to spend 3-12 months at a European University following the courses and sitting the relevant exams; the period of study abroad is recognised as part of the degree programme.

Overseas gives students of the University of Bologna the opportunity to spend a study period abroad as part of their programme, at universities located in four continents: Europe, the Americas, Asia and Oceania. It is organised and entirely funded by the University of Bologna and is the result of collaboration agreements between our university and Universities in non-EU countries.
