Course contents

M-PSI/05:

The lab will allow students to apply the methods and tools of community psychology and use them in the design and the implementation of a prevention and/or well-being promotion project in the community through Service Learning (SL). The SL methodology encourages experiential learning (learning) through active community engagement (service). Students work on a concrete problem identified through the collaboration of the university and community /local organization partnership.

SL include the following activities:

• context analysis in collaboration with local stakeholders / interviews or focus groups with target population,

• design of the intervention (objectives and methodologies) and of the assessment plan,

• implementation of the intervention

• documentation of the project (group final report) and return to the stakeholders.

M-PSI/08:

Identification of signs, symptoms and syndromes in clinical psychology. Differential diagnosis. Formulation of diagnostic hypotheses and treatment planning.

Readings/Bibliography

Teaching methods

M-PSI/05:

Service-Learning integrates the traditional learning with a "community engagement" experience on real-world issues through fieldwork. Methods used will be the following: short lectures, small group work, guided discussions, collection and analysis of qualitative and / or quantitative data, documentation and dissemination to local stakeholders. The class will be divided into small groups that will work continuously on the same project. S-L includes classroom activities (about 10h) and field work (about 20h). During class students will be supervised on the following topics:

• Design of the intervention

• Context analysis

• Implementation of the intervention and evaluation plans

• Documentation and critical reflexivity

M-PSI/08:

Teaching methods will include group work, clinical case presentations, role-playing, practical examples of psychological interventions

Assessment methods

M-PSI/05:

To pass the exam students are requested to:

• attend classes and do field work

• participate actively and contribute to the final written report that illustrates the project/intervention developed by each group. The instructions for the preparation of the group report will be provided during classes.

• produce an individual written critical reflection on their S-L experience, using a field diary and completing an evaluation questionnaire.

M-PSI/08:

Active participation to the laboratory course is essential in order to get admitted to the final examination. The final evaluation will consist in a written exam concerning topics discussed during classes. This final examination will take place during the last class of the laboratory course
