Learning outcomes

At the end of the module the student possesses the knowledge, as far as he is concerned, of the epidemiology and prognosis of tumors, of the clinical manifestations and complications of tumors, the role of the nurse in the diagnostic-therapeutic approach, in chemotherapy and new target therapies , in the management of anticancer treatment and prevention and treatment of complications and the relevant role of early palliative care too,  the relevant  of radiotherapy and metabolic radiotherapy in the treatment of cancer patients.

Acquire skills in the nursing management of chemotherapy with particular focus on new molecularly targeted drugs, which today are essential for the care and survival of many cancer patients in the treatment of lung, breast, colon,  melanoma and many other tumors. The nurse will have to acquire specific skills in the method of drug administration, know the therapeutic indications as well as acquire knowledge in the management of adverse events being the healthcare professional to whom the patient increasingly turns to ask for support, support during hospitalization, in the DSV but also in the home management of patients who have activated integrated oncological home care . Also acquire nursing skills on the management of adverse events of integrated radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatments, understanding the important role and indications of radiotherapy in the different settings of oncological disease, early, locally advanced and metastatic disease, the curative role of radiotherapy in the postoperative phase, when preoperative radiotherapy treatment is indicated, as well as the indications and role of palliative and analgesic radiotherapy in the management of patients with metastatic disease with a particular focus on pain management with radiotherapy in the treatment of bone metastases. Acquire skills on the nursing management of the multiple symptoms related to the disease, such as asthenia, management of chronic and acute pain therapy, nursing management in the nutritional field. These indications are part of the initiation of early palliative care, which today, if started already in the early phase, can clearly impact the outcome of the disease, increasing survival and significantly impacting the quality of life of patients,

Epidemiology of neoplastic diseases.

Bases of cancer carcinogenesis.

Definition of inheritance and familiarity.

Impact on the survival of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention: what role can  a specialized nurse have in supporting information and screening campaigns

Main classes of oncological drugs, molecular targeted therapies and related toxicities.

Nursing management in the administration of moleculare targeted drugs and management of toxicity both in hospital and home settings

Brief review of the general staging of neoplasms.

Definition of radical surgery, palliative debulking and its indications in the treatment of oncological diseases


Definition of chemotherapy, radiotherapy: adjuvant, neo-adjuvant and palliative and related indications

Breast cancer epidemiology, diagnosis and chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment, in-depth study on the nursing management method relating to the many molecular target drugs also in use in the home setting

Colorectal tumors epidemiology diagnosis and chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment

Lung cancer epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment chemotherapy ancd radiotherapy tratment.


Gastric cancer epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Pancreatic cancer epidemiology, diagnosis and chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment.

Early initiation of palliative care: the key role of the nurse in this area

Teaching methods The course will also be characterized by interactivity with the students, in-progress checks will be carried out, in the form of a question or test to verify the real learning of the students during the lessons, to make any further study on some topics of particular importance and interest for the course of treatment and therapy of the oncological patient,

Assessment methods

the exam will be written in the form of multiple choice test the student may, on request, perform an oral test, with agreements from time to time, if the result of the test was not full marks
