Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: identify periodontal parameters; perform etiological therapy to limit, delay, or halt periodontal disease; and perform periodontal maintenance. Students will have learned the anatomy of periodontal tissues, the microbiology of periodontal pathogenic bacteria, and the classification of periodontal diseases.
Course contents
Practical skills
Measurement of key periodontal parameters (probing depth, bleeding, mobility, clinical attachment, recession, etc.)
Ability to educate and motivate patients regarding home oral hygiene
Theoretical knowledge
Anatomy of periodontal tissues: gingiva, periodontal ligament, root cementum, alveolar bone
Periodontal microbiology: main periodontopathogenic bacteria and their role in pathogenesis
Classification of periodontal diseases: diagnostic criteria and main clinical features according to international guidelines
Readings/Bibliography

Assessment methods
The oral exam consists of one or more questions on the syllabus covered. To pass the exam, students must obtain a passing grade on all questions, and the final grade is calculated as the average of the three grades.
The purpose of the oral exam is to test the student's ability to apply their knowledge and make the necessary logical-deductive connections. The number of questions may vary based on the student's level of preparation and depth of understanding of the subject matter as demonstrated in their answers. The exam aims to assess the achievement of the following learning objectives:
* Knowledge of the diagnostic and clinical process of the main periodontal diseases
* Knowledge of the main concepts of microbiology and etiology of periodontal disease
* Knowledge of the classification of periodontal diseases and treatment guidelines for periodontitis
* Knowledge of the principles of oral hygiene motivation and instruction (STEP 1 and 2)
Final grade grading:
→ 18-19: Knowledge of a very limited number of topics covered in the course and analytical skills that emerge only with the instructor's assistance, generally using correct language; → 20-24: Knowledge of a limited number of topics covered in the course and independent analysis skills only on purely executive issues, using correct language; → 25-29: Knowledge of a large number of topics covered in the course, ability to make independent critical analysis choices, mastery of specific terminology; → 30-30L: Substantially comprehensive preparation on the topics covered in the course, ability to independently make critical analysis and connections, full command of specific terminology, and ability to argue and self-reflect.
The final grade will then be weighted averaged with the other exam modules included in the Integrated Course.
Students with learning disabilities and temporary or permanent disabilities are encouraged to contact the dedicated office (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/it/per-studenti ) as soon as possible to discuss appropriate compensatory measures. The request must be submitted in advance (15 days before the exam date) to the instructor, who will evaluate the adequacy of the measures, taking into account the learning objectives.
Teaching tools
The theoretical lectures will be conducted in a classroom equipped with multimedia equipment, primarily using Keynote slides.
Students will be provided with PDF versions of the slides presented during the lectures via email.
