Learning outcomes

By the end of the first year, students are proficient in Dutch at A2 level. They have been introduced to Dutch Studies, diachronically and synchronically, through the study of topics of cultural history and geography and oral presentations.

Course contents

a) Introduction (in Italian) to the Dutch Studies. History of the Dutch language. Cultural history of the Low Countries. 

b) Linguistic activities with the following themes: Identity (name, occupation, family), Space (house and home, nation, origin), Time (counting, chronology, narrative /Tense and time), Things and processes (eating and drinking, buying and selling, booking and ordering, presenting; taste, preference and habits). Phonology and Morphology: vowels, consonants and diphthongs; syllables, compounds. Grammar: the main clause, the verbal group, time and aspect, modality, nouns and adjectives. Pronouns, prepositions and adverbs.

Teaching methods

Students will participate actively with oral presentations.

a) Oral presentation. Oral exam.
b) Written and spoken language test.
