Course contents
Interdisciplinary Seminar on Male Violence Against Women
The seminar will focus on an interdisciplinary exploration of the issues and themes related to the phenomenon of male violence against women. It will consist of sessions aimed at broadening thematic and methodological perspectives, featuring contributions from scholars and experts, both from within and outside the University of Bologna, in order to highlight the complexity of the phenomenon.
The scientific coordination of the seminar is conducted in collaboration with Maria (Milli) Virgilio.
The topics addressed include:
- the socio-cultural framework (gender role expectations, stereotypes) and the economic inequalities;
- the legal framework (definitions and legal instruments), with a focus on the ongoing changes in Italian legislation concerning femicide and gender-based violence;
- the extreme forms of violence (femicide: data and analysis of public discourse);
- the problem of definitions (statistical, social, jorunalistic, legal);
- the online gender violence (for esample hate speech, revenge porn).
The seminar sessions are scheduled to take place on Mondays from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. (Ruffilli Lecture Hall, Strada Maggiore 45), during the first semester, starting on Monday, 15 September.
Students are kindly requested to register through the Laboratory's Virtual Space.
Erasmus and Overseas exchange students are welcome.
Readings/Bibliography
The supporting bibliography will be indicated and published on the Virtuale platform during the course of the seminar.
As in previous years, the materials progressively made available will also be published in a dedicated section of the Osservatorio di ricerca sul femminicidio website, which also hosts additional relevant materials and data.
Given the nature of the Laboratory-Seminar, regular attendance is strongly encouraged. However, for students who are unable to attend, in addition to consulting the aforementioned materials progressively published in the Laboratory-Seminar’s Virtuale space, the following text is required reading:
P. Lalli (ed.), L'amore non uccide. Femminicidio e discorso pubblico: cronaca, tribunali, politiche, Bologna, Il Mulino [the ebook version is available on the Darwin Books platform of Il Mulino, accessible via “idem” using UniBo credentials].
Teaching methods
The laboratory-seminar format places strong emphasis on student attendance and active participation.
The seminar is structured to include contributions from experts across various disciplines.
Students will also have the opportunity to work in small groups to carry out short exercises and discussions on the topics addressed during the seminar.
The operational guidelines will be defined through a learning agreement established during the first session.
As previously mentioned, registration on the Laboratory-Seminar's Virtuale platform is required in order to facilitate the organization of activities and to access the materials that will be progressively made available.
Assessment methods
The Laboratory-Seminar does not include a graded evaluation but awards a pass/fail qualification for the acquisition of the corresponding CFU (university credits).
Attending students (with attendance of at least 70% of the sessions): the qualification is awarded based on attendance and participation in the exercises.
Students who are unable to attend or who do not meet the 70% attendance requirement: written examination consisting of multiple-choice questions and one open-ended question. The questions will pertain both to the materials available on Virtuale and to the volume listed in the bibliography. To obtain the credits, students must correctly answer at least half of the multiple-choice questions and provide a satisfactory response to the open-ended question.
Teaching tools
Use of PowerPoint or similar presentation materials, videos, and infographics; expert contributions and discussions; dedicated space on the Virtuale platform; and use of materials available on the Osservatorio di ricerca sul femminicidio website as well as the section on violence against women from the official ISTAT website.
