Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, the student will be familiar with documentation tools as well as basic translation methodologies and techniques; will be able to apply them in the pre-translation analysis of the source text and in the drafting of the target text, in accordance with the communicative functions of the texts to be translated and the specific translation brief; and will be able to employ these processes in translating a range of non-specialist texts from Italian into Russian, consistent with an elementary level of translation competence.

Course contents

The course in active translation is designed to equip students with essential tools, techniques, and strategies for translating a variety of texts from Italian into Russian, while also fostering the development and consolidation of written expression skills in Russian.

Building on the morphosyntactic knowledge acquired during the first two years of Russian language study, the course will place particular emphasis on the following areas:

  • transcription of foreign terms into the Cyrillic alphabet;

  • translation of culture-specific elements;

  • rendering of linguistic structures characteristic of Italian;

  • logical analysis and word order in Russian;

  • rules of Russian punctuation;

  • stylistic registers of Russian;

  • use of corpora as translation tools;

  • terminological research.


Students will engage in the translation of texts drawn from a wide spectrum of domains, ranging from general texts related to everyday life in Italy to more specialized materials connected with hallmark Made in Italy sectors such as food and wine, fashion, ceramics, and others.

Teaching methods

The course requires a minimum attendance of 70%.

Lectures will be alternated with interactive and group activities. Throughout the course, students will be regularly assigned translation exercises to complete at home, which will then be discussed and compared in class (for instructional purposes only, not for assessment).

Assessment methods

The final written exam will be conducted as follows: students will be required to translate a text on one of the topics covered during the course. During the exam, students may use all translation support tools, including the Internet, with the exception of machine translation systems and artificial intelligence applications.

The exam text will be approximately 250 words in length, and students will have 2.5 hours to complete the task.
