Course contents
The course is intended as a continuation of the path on Chinese literature begun with the course “Chinese Literature I,” focusing on modern and contemporary literature. Students will study the development of Chinese literature from the fall of the empire to the present day, ranging across various types of texts and literary forms, but with a focus on fiction.
Course content will include the following topics: Lu Xun and romanticism, Beijing and Shanghai currents, realism, literature and revolution, obscure poetry, the “search for roots” and the literary avant-garde, memory and neorealism, Sinophone literature, and contemporary science fiction.
