Learning outcomes
At the end of the module the student has the ability to apply knowledge and understanding regarding the clinical-functional balance of subjects with pathologies affecting the cardio-respiratory system. Knows the objectives and knows how to plan, program and implement a physiotherapy intervention in subjects with respiratory-cardiological pathologies and/or undergoing surgery/transplant. The student knows and understands the epidemiology, preventive aspects and main operating techniques of burns. Knows and understands the role and purpose of rehabilitation and knows how to plan, program and implement an adequate rehabilitation intervention in the burn patient. The student knows and understands the theoretical principles and knows how to plan, program and apply a physiotherapy intervention in patients with pelvic floor dysfunction or urinary and fecal incontinence.
Course contents
RESPIRATORY PHYSIOTHERAPY
- Introduction to Respiratory Physiotherapy
- Historical notes and objectives
- Outlines of Anatomy and Physiology of the Respiratory System
- Clinical and functional evaluation of the patient with respiratory problems: data collection, observation, subjective evaluation, objective evaluation (pulmonary function tests, reading and interpretation of the EGA)
- Principles underlying the setting of a respiratory physiotherapy treatment: posture, volume, flow.
- Bronchial unblocking techniques based on location in the lung
- CPAP, humidification, tracheostomy tube management, oxygen therapy, inhalation therapy: the role of the physiotherapist
- Exercise training: Evaluation and treatment setting
- Application of the techniques explored so far, in the main respiratory pathologies: COPD, bronchiectasis, asthma, cystic fibrosis, OSAS, neuromuscular diseases, interstitial diseases, cardio-thoracic surgery and lung transplantation, the patient in intensive care unit
- Discussion of clinical cases

Teaching methods
Lectures with projection of teaching material in Power Point, practical exercises among students, discussion of clinical cases, role play
Assessment methods
Learning will be assessed through an oral exam, during which the student will be presented with a clinical case, to discuss, and identify the objectives, assessment tools, and treatment.
Questions will also be included regarding definitions and techniques covered during lectures.
A question on pelvic floor rehabilitation and a question on burn patient rehabilitation will also be included.
Grade out of 30.
