Learning outcomes
The purpose of the course is to provide the student with essential knowledge regarding the ways in which individuals perceive and interpret the environmental reality, considering media messages and the processes of influence arising from interpersonal interaction (facilitation vs. social inhibition). Specifically, the student has acquired: - knowledge related to the setting of the biomedical model and the biopsychosocial model; - knowledge related to the concept of illness in the sociocultural context (illness and disease); - intervention strategies for individuals and the community in order to promote the process of 'empowerment'.
Course contents
The course includes the following topics:
- SOCIAL COGNITION AND SOCIAL IDENTITY: The role of cognitive, affective and social factors to understand the link between social cognition and social behaviour in relation to health
- SOCIAL STEREOTYPE: Theoretical models on social stereotypes, intergroup prejudices and discrimination and main strategies to reduce intergroup bias especially used in the healthcare area
- PERSUASION: The main theories and tools used to persuade others and their application in the relationship between healthcare worker and patient
Readings/Bibliography
Teaching materials that will be used in class will be essential and sufficient to prepare for the exam.
Teaching methods
The course will be taught trough frontal lessons but also activities will be used to illustrate the most important concepts of the course.
Team work will be organized to focus on the main topics and understand how social-psychological process explain real and daily life phenomena.
Comments and discussions will be strongly encouraged also in order facilitate the links among topics.
The frequency to the lessons will be measured and it is strongly recommended.
Assessment methods
The exam at the end of the course will consist of an oral presentation aimed to illustrated one of the topics of the course through the reading of specific research articles.
The following criteria will be applied for the evaluation of the exam:
- Appropriateness and completeness of the information (e.g., references)
- Clarity of exposition
- Critical understanding of the topic (i.e., examples and reasoning)
- Coherence of the argumentation
The following scores will be assigned according to the satisfaction of the criteria:
- Up to 30 cum laude: 4 criteria are fully satisfied
- Between 27-29: 3 criteria are fully satisfied
- Between 24-26: 2 criteria are fully satisfied
- Between 21-23: at least 1 criteria is fully satisfied and others are partially satisfied
- Between 18-20: More than one criteria is partially satisfied
Moreover, during the course, students will be also asked to work in teams on given topics. These activities will be also contribute to students' final mark.
The weighted average of the grades for this and the other two modules that constitue the course will determine the final grade. Honors do not correspond to a grade of 31, but will be awarded if achieved in 2 out of 3 of the module grades.
