39207 - Oral Hygiene Tecnique 3

Academic Year 2025/2026

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Dental Hygiene (cod. 8481)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student has a preparation that allows him to formulate a treatment plan and carry out a dental hygiene treatment in causal therapy and supportive therapy in patients with fixed and removable prostheses and with implant-prosthetic rehabilitations. The student also has advanced knowledge of the manual and ultrasonic instruments most suitable for patients with fixed or removable prostheses and with implant-prosthetic rehabilitations. In particular, the student is able to:

Analyze the data collected to identify the patient's primary and secondary prevention needs

Evaluate and calculate the risk level of caries with particular attention to the prosthetic elements

Evaluate and calculate the risk level of relapses due to periodontal disease with particular attention to prosthetic elements and implants

Formulate a dental hygiene treatment plan including educational, motivational and therapeutic interventions with particular attention to prostheses and implant-prostheses

Identify the most suitable protocol and establish the number of treatment sessions non-surgical periodontal instrumentation in relation to the oral and systemic clinical situation of the patient and the type of prosthesis present.

Know the advantages and disadvantages of manual and mechanical non-surgical periodontal instrumentation with particular attention to prostheses and implant-prostheses

Carry out manual and mechanical non-surgical periodontal instrumentation with alternative instruments

Re-evaluate the patient at the end of the causal therapy

Draw up a therapy plan supportive periodontal therapy

Determine the parameters to schedule the frequency of supportive periodontal therapy appointments.

Course contents

Compilation of the folder: collection of clinical and anamnestic data Detection and interpretation of clinical indices: identification of the individual risk profile. Usable criteria and tools Formulation of a treatment plan and choice of protocol to be adopted in relation to the clinical and systemic situation of the patient. Purpose of non-surgical periodontal therapy Identification of supportive therapy and preventodontic procedures appropriate to the individual clinical case Insights into the etiology and preventodontic treatment of some dental lesions (erosion, abrasion, abfraction, caries) and halitosis In-depth analysis of the correlations between systemic and periodontal diseases: meaning of the "systemic inflammatory load" and its implications in non-surgical periodontal treatment. Evaluation of the aspects of nutrition involved in the primary and secondary prevention of dento-periodontal diseases Motivational approach and Hermann model

Readings/Bibliography

Cortesi Ardizzone e altri - Igienista Orale - terapia e pratica professionale - Ed.EDRA

Trombelli - Strumentazione parodontale non chirurgica - Ed.Masson

Teaching methods

Instrumentation exercises on models and mannequins

Non-surgical periodontal instrumentation treatments for causal and supportive therapy on patients, to be performed in the dedicated department and under the constant supervision of the instructor.

Posture and asepsis monitoring

Theoretical lectures in the classroom are conducted using digital presentations. Students will be provided with the slides presented in PDF format.

Assessment methods

Production of a paper relating to a clinical case covered during practical training activities and oral discussion. The paper must formulate a dental hygiene treatment plan including educational, motivational, and therapeutic interventions and identify the most appropriate protocol based on the patient's oral and systemic clinical situation.

Grade Rating:

18-19 - Limited analytical skills on a few topics and imprecise language

20-24 - Knowledge of a limited number of topics and limited critical analysis skills

25-29 - Ability to make reasoned clinical decisions and master specific terminology

30-30L - Substantially comprehensive preparation, critical reasoning skills, ability to draw on existing knowledge to apply connections and logical reasoning.

Students with learning disabilities and temporary or permanent disabilities are encouraged to contact the dedicated office (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/it/per-studenti ) as soon as possible to discuss appropriate compensatory measures. The request must be submitted in advance (15 days before the exam date) to the instructor, who will evaluate the appropriateness of the measures, taking into account the learning objectives.
