Learning outcomes

At the end of the module the student possesses the knowledge and ability to understand a care model based on physiology, continuity of care and practical organization to create de-medicalized environments for birth.

Course contents

  • Efficacy and safety of childbirth in an out-of-hospital environment.
  • Epidemiology of out-of-hospital birth.
  • Professional requirements for midwives who follow out-of-hospital births.
  • Obstetric care for out-of-hospital births. Labor, delivery and postpartum:
  1. childbirth eligibility criteria;
  2. prenatal information, obstetric management and informed consent;
  3. assistance in an extra-hospital environment;
  4. methods for transferring mother and newborn to hospital;
  5. maternal emergencies in an extra-hospital environment;
  6. neonatal resuscitation at home;
  7. the obstetric bag.
  • Postpartum care in an out-of-hospital environment:
  1. continuity of care, maternal-neonatal obstetric checks to promote the well-being and protect the health of the dyad;
  2. prophylaxis, screening and pediatric visit.
  • Testimonials from midwives and families with experience of out-of-hospital births and continuity of care.
