39409 - Semiotics of Musical and Audiovisual Languages (1)

Academic Year 2021/2022

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Communication Sciences (cod. 8885)

Learning outcomes

The classes aim to provide the student with the semantic and the semiotic tools needed to analyze contemporary musical and audiovisual languages, applying them to both aesthetic and popular culture texts, such as movies, television programs, songs, video clips, etc.

Course contents

During the classes, both semiotic methodology and concrete analyses of audio-visual languages will be introduced. We will handle texts such as Mulholland Drive, Eternal Sunchine of the Spotless Mind, Westworld, Perfect Sense, Lost Highway, Wish You Were Here by the Pink Floyd, Everything in its Right Place by Radiohead and many others. A special focus on the relationship between subjectivity and semiotic enunciation will be the object of a special part of the classes.

Due to the nature of the topics, attending the classes is recommended.

Readings/Bibliography

U. Eco, Lector in fabula, Bompiani, Milano.
F. Casetti, Dentro lo sguardo, Bompiani, Milano.
C. Paolucci, Persona. Soggettività nel linguaggio e semiotica dell'enunciazione, Bompiani, Milano: pp. 1-133 e 285-362.

Teaching methods

The main objective of the course is to show the students how to semiotically analyze complex texts, but close to pop culture, in order to teach them an analytical "know-how" and a point of view on languages and communication that they can use also during their future (both at the master's degree level and at during their working experiences). Precisely for this reason, it would be advisable to attend the classes, in order to see concretely how a semiotic analysis is done.

Assessment methods

Written questions about the books listed above or the writing of a paper concerning the semiotic analysis of an audiovisual text.
