Learning outcomes
This course summarizes the principles of an integrated tissue engineering (TE) approach. At the end of the course, the student - knows the general specifications of suitable cells and biomaterials and applicable culture protocols in dedicated devices (bioreactors); - overviewed the analyses that allow to evaluate the in vitro maturation of a cultured tissue construct; - is aware of the regulatory framework governing its experimental and clinical use.
Course contents
Stem cells in tissue engineering (TE).
TE scaffolds: chemical, physical and biological properties of natural and synthetic biomaterials of interest for the aim; scaffold fabrication methods; bioactive substance delivery; cell/biomaterial interactions (biocompatibility e differentiation assessment).
TE bioreactor systems: cell culture in bioreactors for TE; examples/applications.
Readings/Bibliography
The slides presented in classroom will be available in IOL.
Current literature will be circulated.
Teaching methods
Classes and practicals.
Assessment methods
1) A written essay about the design of a specific tissue engineering protocol, as suggested by the lecturer. An oral individual report of the above mentioned essay (up to 25/30).
2) Multiple choice test (15 questions - up to 5/30).
