Learning outcomes

At the end of the seminar, students will be able to define a research project, to work independently developing his ability to self-criticism and to confront with other students. Furthermore, they acquire methodological precision and accuracy.

Course contents

Simone de Beauvoir and The Second Sex

The seminar will provide the instruments for a close reading, historical contextualization and for the analysis of one of the most important sex of contemporary feminist theory, Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex. Teacher’s lectures will aim to expose the historical and theoretical frame of Beauvoir’s work, with reference of the wider picture of the 20th century political and feminist thought. In the second part of the seminar, students will present in front of the class and discuss a short paper on a chosen chapter of Beauvoir’s book.

Teaching methods

Reading, comment and discussion of the text.

Assessment methods

The assessment will be based on the short text presented and on the participation to the discussion during the workshop. The students that will not attend the workshop must present a 2000 words paper on Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex.
