Course contents

The course is divided into 2 parts.

The first part of the course will provide an overview of social anthropology, by illustrating the history of this discipline, its essential theoretical elements and research subjects, and its fundamental methodological instruments, besides an introduction to urban anthropology.

Te second part will focus on the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion in urban social contexts starting from the ethnographies of Philippe Bourgois on New York and San Francisco and Didier Fassin on Paris. We will concentrate on themes such as racial segregation, drug economy and the role of police in urban ghettos.

Teaching methods

The first part is a written exam composed of 2 questions, to be answered in 1,5 hours, on the following books

1) U. Hannerz, Esplorare la città, Il Mulino 2001 (qualsiasi edizione, introduzione esclusa)

2) Li Causi L., Uomo e potere, Carocci 1993. 

The second part is a oral exam, the students mus choos 2 books among:

1) P. Bourgois, Cercando rispetto, Derive Approdi, 2005.
2) P. Bourgois, Reietti e fuorilegge, Derive Approdi, 2011.
3) D. Fassin, La forza dell'ordine. Antropologia della polizia nelle periferie urbane, La Linea 2013.
