Learning outcomes
To acquire basic andtechnological knowledge of the most advanced materialsfor energy conversionsystems such as lithium batteries, supercapacitors and fuel cells and of the main electrochemical techniques to test these systems.
Course contents
Basic aspects of energy storage and conversion systems such as batteries, supercapacitors and fuel cells.
Present state of the technology of pimary and rechargeable lithium batteries, supercapacitors and fuell cells forportable (electronic marketand biomedial devices), transport (electric and hybrid vehicles) and stationary applications.
Research and developement of electrode and electrolyte materials for lithium batteries, supercapacitors and fuel cells.
Lab experiences will be performed on the characterization of materials, electrodes and devices.
Readings/Bibliography
Indications about reference texts (all available in the mainlibraries)will be done during the course. Papers and review articles will be also provided.
Teaching methods
Frontal lessons: basic and technological aspects of electrochemical energy conversion systems such as lithium batteries, supercapacitors and fuel cells.
Laboratory training on physical chemistry characterizations of materials for lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors and fuel cells and electrochemical tests on the above reported energy conversion systems.
Assessment methods
The final exam is oral and based on a program topic chosen by the student and two or more questions on the main program topics.The exam aims to determine both the acquisition of expected knowledge by the course program and the student's ability to find links among the covered topics, also using the reference material provided by the teacher. Each student (or group) should provide a report on each laboratory activity; the reports will be evaluated . Each student receives a mark based on the ability to present in concise and complete manner the specific issues and on the activity reports. Organic vision and criticism of the topics and mastery of specific language will be evaluated very positively; mnemonic knowledge of the subject, lack of synthesis and inappropriate specific language will be evaluated not so positively.
Teaching tools
Power point presentations used during the lessons and any research material will be provided to the students in electronic format via Internet. The power point presentations used during the course will be uploaded on the site http://campus.unibo.it/ before the corresponding lesson. Students are invited to print the presentations and bring them to classes.
