Course contents
Tourism is not only vacation. The tourism industry is one of the world's largest industries, and it is clearly of great significance to developing countries. But is it important in those countries with the highest proportion of poor people? Can tourism benefit the local communities? How can tourism improve global citizenship?
Despite the variety of banalities that are often associated with trips and vacations as mass consumption, the study of tourism – due to the commitment of social, economic, political and cultural energy - remains one of the predominant inputs for understanding contemporary society and the new social hierarchies that distinguish it.
Moving from the concept of responsible tourism as an agent of sustainable and socially-conscious development the course explores the different dimensions of development and tourism with the aim to provide the elements for the promotion of active citizenship .
Among the topics that will be covered: Anthropology and Sociology of tourism, local development and international cooperation, Impacts of tourism, social responsibility and economics of culture. Particular attention will be given to the techniques and tools of tourism-communication.
The teacher will be joined by witnesses from the institutions, private companies and non-profit organizations operating in the economy of culture and development. Among others , the network that realizes IT.A.CÀ. migrants and travelers : FESTIVAL OF RESPONSIBLE TOURISM ( www.festivalitaca.net ). The Festival will represent a concrete opportunity to get in touch with the many actors that are involved in the various events.
The course is open to a limited
number of students; the registration is requested by 20 December
2013.
