Learning outcomes

During the course students will receive a basic knowledge of the history of romance medieval languages and literatures, envisaged in a comparative perspective.

Course contents

12 CFU Course

The syllabus consists in the following three Parts:

(A) Introduction to Romance Linguistics.

(B) Outline of old French Literature (Hagiography and Epic).

(C) Chanson de Roland.

6 CFU Course:

(A) Introduction to Romance Linguistics.

(B) Outline of old French Literature (Hagiography, Epic, Novel).

 Students coming from abroad or unable to attend can agree upon another syllabus with the teacher.

1. A. Varvaro, Linguistica romanza. Corso introduttivo, Napoli, Liguori, 2001: only Part A, chapters 1-2; Part B, chapter 3; Part C, chapters 19-25; Part D, chapters 34-39.

2. P. Gresti, Antologia delle letterature romanze del Medioevo, Bologna, Pàtron, Second edition, 2011, Sections A (Agiografia) and B (Epica): the texts will be read in italian; particular attention will be paid to Gresti's introductions and historical-exegetic commentary.

3. La 'Canzone di Orlando', a cura di Mario Bensi, Milano, BUR, 1985 (and reprints): students will read the whole text in italian; a selection of 200 lines will be read in the original language and translated, picking in 'laisses' I-VII, XX-XXVI, LVIII-LXII, LXVI-LXVIII, LXXXI-XC, CXXVIII-CXXXIV, CXLV-CXLIX, CLXVIII-CLXXV.

4. Au. Roncaglia, La lingua d'oil. Profilo di grammatica storica del francese antico, Roma, Edizioni dell'Ateneo, 1971 (repr., Pisa-Roma, Fabrizio Serra Editore, 2005): the basic notions of old French for the sake of the translation and linguistic commentary of the Chanson de Roland.

Teaching methods

Readings and commentaries in class, introduced with a historical and linguistic outline.

Assessment methods

Final oral examination concerning the whole course contents, according to the above-given indications. Students coming from abroad or unable to attend can agree upon another syllabus with the teacher.
