Learning outcomes
Medieval history and cities.
Target skills and knowledge:
During the course students will:
- learn how to distinguish between history and historiography;
- learn sources meanings and typologies;
- learn theories and hypothesis about the periodization of history and medieval period;
- understand medieval period elements of continuity and rupture (nomads and sedentaries, the great results of medieval cultures, their marks and heritage in modern world);
- identify and expound distinctive features of the medieval period cultures;
- acquire knowledge about medieval period changes and events, particularly referred to history of cities;
At the end of the course students should:
- be able to manage acquired knowledge in order to make written and oral texts about general and specific topics;
- be able to do research by using specific bibliography;
- be able to plan programs and cultural education interventions based on acquired knowledge.Course contents
Medieval History and Cities

The entire course, which begins September 24 and ends December
7, will be held at the Aula 1 Via Zamboni 34, according to the
schedule C (Monday and Tuesday from 11.45 to 13.30, Wednesday from
8 , 15 to 10.00)
In the lessons on Monday and Tuesday will be:
- The basic elements of historical subjects: epistemology,
methodology of research and teaching (history and historiography;
periodization; sources, including research and teaching, teaching
and learning of history, origin and meanings of the Middle
Ages).
- The general history of the time called the Middle Ages (the major
outcomes of a millennium, nomadic and sedentary, the three
monotheistic religions, and Regnum sacerdotium, comparisons and
conflicts between the spiritual and temporal power, processes of
building new political territorial teams: from the realms
Roman-barbarian empires, from ordinary people to the regional
states; towards a Europe of Nations, the changes in the economic,
agricultural, manufacturing and commercial, climatic factors and
technological developments, links with demographic trends, the
great crisis) .
In the lessons on Wednesday it will:
- The history of the city from antiquity to modern, with particular
reference to that of Bologna

1) For the methodological part and for the general history
requires the study of the following two books:
- R. Dondarini,Per entrare nella storia, Bologna,Clueb, 1999(excluding only the part of the History of Historiography)
- R. Dondarini,Quel tempo chiamato medioevo - mille anni divicende, trasformazioni e antefattidella nostra storia,Napoli, Liguori editore, 2011.
2) For the portion relating to the history of medieval cities,
with particular reference to Bologna, it requires the preparation
of one of the following books:

or
- R. Dondarini,Bologna medievale nella storia delle

Teaching methods
Lectures will be integrated with participation of students: dialogues and research essays about the most important topics. Also visits to museums and to archives can be programmed.

presentations will be used to summarize parts of
