27215 - General Physics 2

Academic Year 2010/2011

  • Docente: Carlo Pellacani
  • Credits: 6
  • SSD: FIS/01
  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Mathematics (cod. 8010)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student acquires a fundamental knowledge on the electric and magnetic phenomena. He/she knows how to use the acquired knowledge to solve simple problems related to the creation of electric and magnetic fields and to oscillating electromagnetic fields. He/she knows how to handle the electromagnetic phenomena.

Course contents

  • Electrostatic field and its properties. Capacitors, electric current, resistors and simple circuits
  • Magnetostatic field and its properties. Lorentz force
  • Electric and magnetic properties of matter: polarization and magnetization
  • Time-dependent electromagnetic phenomena. Electromotive force, inductors and oscillating circuits
  • Maxwell equations
  • Electromagnetic waves. The EM spectrum. Interference, diffraction and polarization
