Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student has acquired a basic knowledge of the various classes of organic compounds and the more important reaction mechanisms. Also, the student will know in details the structure and reactivity of the most important groups of bio-molecules.

Course contents

Chemical bond and carbon hybridization states. Physical properties of organic molecules. Basic concepts of chemical reactivity. Alkanes and cycloalkanes. Alkenes and alkynes. Conformational analysis. Cis/trans (E/Z) isomers. Chiral molecules: enantiomers and diastereomes. Conjugated unsaturated systems. Alcohols, ethers and phenols. Aldehydes and ketones. Carboxylic acids and acyl derivatives. Amines. Carbohydrates: Monosaccharides (D-glucose, D-fructose), Disaccharides (saccharose, maltose, lactose). Polysaccharides. Amino acids and proteins: peptide bond, primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary structure. Lipids: fatty acis, phospholipids, steroids
