Learning outcomes
Students will learn to understand, in its essential lines, the basic notios of historical methodology (the concepts of history, time and space, source, tradition; epistemological approaches: to quantify, to interpret, to narrate; history and memory); to apply these elements to the analysis of written sources and to the problems of the preservation and valorisation of the material (documental and monumental) patrimony; to synthesize the methodological contents of a scientific historical paper, and to present the results of a research; to approach the study of new topics on the basis of the knowledge acquired during the course. Students will also be able to understand and analyze the different historical sources, and to use their data for the construction of a global history.
Course contents
The course is articuled in two parts:
A) (30 hours) the concepts of history, time and space. The tradition. The scientific method. Epistemological approaches: to quantify, to interpret, to narrate. History and memory. The periods: Antiquity, Middle Ages, Modern history. The collection of sources.The cultural heritage: archive, library, museum.
Case studies: the Black Death.Climate and History. Man and Environment in the Miiddle Ages.
B) (18 hours) Modern Historiography and the sources.

Teaching methods
Frontal lessons with presentation and discussion of historical sources (in Italian translation) and of related literature.
Assessment methods
Oral examination: students should be able to critically analyse one or more of the historical sources presented and discussed during the course.
Teaching tools
Frontal lections with reading and discussion of written sources. Guidance towards a selective use of the web for scientific purposes. The Professor will use different typologies of sources (all translated during classes) partly available on the net (especially at www.retimedievali.it). A guided visit to a library or an archive will provide a more direct approach to the primary sources.
