Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to give advanced information about pathological mechanisms, genetics of pathology and genetic analysis of tumors in animal models.

Course contents

organ and system pathology: heart diseases, respiratory diseases,
kidney diseases, circulatory diseases, alterations of saline
balance, red cells diseases.

oncology: oncogenes and oncosuppressors, hereditary cancers: brca
and breast cancer, colon cancer and satellite instability,
oligodendrogliomas and loh analysis, medullary thyroid carcinomas
and ret mutations.

genetics: most frequent mutations in mendelian diseases,
genotype/phenotype correlation, main mutation analysis techniques:
familiar hypercholesterolemia, sickle cells anemia, cystic
fibrosis, x-fragile syndrome. genetic imprinting.    

Animal models:    

Mouse: transgenic mice, conditional and inducible KO, orthotopic models. ici. Modelling of pediatric tumours: retinoblastoma, medulloblastoma and neuroblastoma. Drosophila: transgenesis and binary genetic systems.  Study of oncogenes and tumour suppressors.
