Learning outcomes

The course will focus on the new genetic technologies as tools to further our understanding of genetic mechanisms and gene expression in eukaryotes.

Course contents

Recombinant DNA tecnology. Functional organization of the eukaryotic genome. Methodologies for genome analysis. Reverse genetics. Insertional mutagenesis and knock out mutants. Gene transfer in eukaryotic cells and transgenic organisms. Genetic control of animal development. Drosophila embryonic pattern formation. Formation of morphogenic gradients. mRNA localization and translational control. Establishment of the dorso-ventral and antero-posterior axes of symmetry. Homeotic and segmentation genes.
