Learning outcomes

A knowledge of Quality, Quality Management Systems, Total Quality Management.

An appreciation of the need for Quality and Quality Standards, especially ISO 9000.

An appreciation of the ISO and IEC Technical Specifications; the importance of the type approvals of the products. The CE label of the European Community.

Ability to design, construct and interpret Statistical Process Control (SPC) Methods.

An appreciation of  Reliability in Product and Production systems.

Course contents

The production of goods and services as a creation of value and wealth. Introduction to Quality, Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Total Quality Control and Total Quality Management (Deming, Juran, Ishikawa, Taguchi)). Standards and their inter-relationship: the evolution of ISO 9000.

Salient points of probability and statistics: the normal distribution, the mean, the standard deviation, the sampling, the central limit theorem, the binomial distribution.

The product compliance. The tests, the measurements, the international measuring system, the standards, the instruments for measuring, the calibrations, the uncertainty.

The ISO and IEC Technical Specifications and those of the National Committees; the approvals and the labels concerning the quality of the industrial products.

The Statistical Process Control and the techniques used; the X – R charts; the p, np, c, u charts; the concept of the process capability.

Fundamental principles of reliability. Practical reliability definitions: mean time to failure (MTTF),  mean time between failures (MTBF), the mean time to repair (MTTR) and the availability; the failure rate or hazard rate and the bathtub curve; the function R (reliability). The reliability of the components and of the systems. The life tests. The degradation of materials.
