Learning outcomes
Theory and application of gravity and magnetics methods; description of instrumentation, resolutions of geoscience problems and applications to case histories.
Course contents
The Earth gravity field ( prof. Paolo Baldi): General principles of gravimetry and applications for the determination of subsurface structure of the Earth at different scale, ( the exploration of mineral deposits, ground water resources, site characterization, structural and tectonic interpretation). The instruments ( gravimeters) will be described and operational procedures will be presented. Possible data analysis approaches will be applied by means of laboratory exercises or problems, which will be computer-based, with software provided by the instructor.
The Earth's magnetic field (prof. Michele Dragoni): Phenomenology of the geomagnetic field. Physical properties and dynamics of the Earth's core. The self-excited dynamo. The magnetosphere. Magnetic properties of rocks. Palaeomagnetism.
