Learning outcomes

The course objective is to show the main phenomena affecting design and performance of the following machines:

- centrifugal pumps

- displacement pumps

- hydraulic turbines (Francis, Pelton, Kaplan)

- Internal combustion engines

The course structure follows the path from the general physical law to its application for the given machine, showing how the physical behavior affects on one side the design, and on the other side the machine performance.

Particular attention is devoted to the machines regulation: this is the basis for a deeper study on this topic, that can be attained with other courses.

 

Course contents

Introduction to machines. Euler equation, velocity triangles.

Centrifugal pump: structure, velocity triangle, performance, regulation, induction, cavitation (NPSH determination). Non-dimensional numbers for centrifugal pumps, pump design.

Displacement pump: structures, performance, indicating diagram, regulation. 

Hydraulic turbines: definitions, performance, structure as a function of non-dimensional numbers.

Pelton: structure, velocity triangles, performance, regulation, minimum/maximum blade number, multi-nozzle solution.

Frencis: structure, fluid motion, regulation, performance, cavitation, Thomas number.

Kaplan: structure, performance.

Internal combustion engines: structure, limitations on mean piston speed, inertial and pressure stress. Indicating diagram, thermodynamic cycles (Diesel Otto, Sabathe`), thermodynamic efficiency. Output power, total efficiency. Number of cylinders. Performance diagrams. Regulation. Combustion for spark ignition and compression ignition engines. Knock phenomenon. Pollutant emissions. Pollutants reduction.
