Learning outcomes

The course aims to reconstruct the main terrorism phenomena operating on a global scale during the Cold War phase and the political, social, economic and religious dynamics connected to them. Particular attention will be paid to political terrorism in Italy in the 1970s and to independence in Northern Ireland and the Basque and Catalan areas. Nor will the terrorist dimension linked to the radicalization of political Islam be overlooked. At the end of the course the student will be able to provide a reconstruction of the main interpretative theories relating to the evolution of international terrorism. He will be able to move between the different categorizations, reconstruct and contextualize the main terrorist phenomena, their connections with the dynamics of political, social and economic evolution and how all this impacts on the evolution of a democratic system.

Course contents

aim of the course is to provide students with the tools to understand terrorism as a form of asymmetric warfare, with particular attention to the jihadist phenomenon, and to acquire a basic knowledge of the tools and main intelligence organizations that counter it. the course is structured in three parts. The introductory part is focused on strategic sciences and intelligence. The second part instead places the jihadist phenomenon in the Middle Eastern Islamic context and in the historical dimension, from the Arab-Palestinian terrorism of the seventies to the Shiite militias of Hezbollah, from Al Qaeda to ISIS. The third part, on the other hand, envisages the presence of specialized operators from the police forces and the intelligence sector, to allow students to learn about case studies, listen to testimonies, and speak directly with the leading experts in the sector.
