Learning outcomes

Learning outcomes The course provides relevant information with regard to the protection of religious freedom and regulation of cults in italian and in other jurisdictions. The student will gain mastery of the major systems of relations between Church and State in the world and also knowledge of the elements of the internal law of the numerically largest most represented faiths and their own structures. Specific focus will therefore be given to some study cases in an international perspective in order to highlight the continuous review in the local-global dynamics of the relationship between religious factors and legal systems, in between religious ordinances and State laws.

Course contents

 

 

The course is organized with a part of lectures taught online on MS TEAMS (20 hours) and another taught in presence (20 hours). The number of students allowed in class is determined on the basis of class capacity and by the health and safety provisions that deal with the pandemic emergency. In case more students want to attend classes in presence than permitted by the rules, a system of shifts will be organized so to allow students to participate. Regardless of the health-related conditions and the specific organization of the course, students will be able to follow the lessons of the entire course remotely on MS TEAMS.

Systems of relations between State and Churches in Italy and Europe.
Religion as an asset legally protected by the State. The regulation of religious freedom in the sources of Italian and European ecclesiastical law. In particular: agreements, understandings, ecclesiastical treaties. European Union and religious institutions. Small States and religious factor. Nods on pontifical diplomacy.
Notion of religious confession in Italy: comparative aspects.
Republican State and Catholic Church in Italy. Blasphemy and incitement to religious hatred in contemporary society: cases and issues. Criminal protection of cults in Europe and the world. Religious freedom in the Russian Federation.
Minority religious confessions: Understanding and acuerdos with the State in Italy and Spain. Confessions without Understanding in Italy: the legal regulation of Islam. Islam in Europe. Role and interaction of Islamic law in a non-Islamic context.
The role of religiously inspired organizations in this historical context and in the globalized world: Islam in comparison.

In the course of their lessons, the theachers will supply and recommend teaching aids and further learning material, following students' specific requests and interests. The material will be progressively uploaded to the teacher’s website and made available to students.

Teaching methods

The course will develop through lectures and seminars. Students will be informed about dates and times of the seminars during the lectures or through notices, also on the Faculty web site. The teachers use slides that will be made available to the students.Lectures will be given in the first semester.

Assessment methods

The verification of learning consists in a final exam which will explore the acquisition of knowledge and skills requested through an oral examination sustained directly with the professor.

Teaching tools

The teachers use slides that will be made available to the students to help them in the comprehension of the issues and the institutions explained during the lesson. During the lessons the teachers will indicate and provide texts and supplementary materials to complete the preparation. Students who need compensatory tools for reasons of disability or Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) will communicate to the teacher their needs so as to be directed to the dedicated person and arrange on the adoption of the most appropriate measures.
