Learning outcomes

The student knows the linguistics of the Russian language in a deepened way (phonology, morphosyntax, lexicology, semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics, stylistics and linguistics of the corpora). At the end of the two years course, the student is able to apply such knowledge by means of the use of suitable tools, the textual analysis; he/she knows how to use the learning methods which are developed in order to deepen and update in autonomy his/her own knowledge; he/she knows how to plan a linguistic search in a correct way. Through practical exercises during these 2 years, his/her communicative competences within all the linguistics abilities progress up to the level C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference, which allows students to effectively interpret the partner-linguistic and cultural codes in any subject within a communicative relationship.

Course contents

The theoretical course, following text analysis approach of the preceding course of Russian Linguistics 1, focuses on the study of semantics and lexicology of the contemporary Russian language. The questions of the composition of Russian lexis, semantic analysis, lexical collocability, neologisms formation, stylistic nuances of meaning and phraseology will be examined. Furthermore, the course will illustrate the prospects of the corpora linguistics applied to the study of contemporary Russian.

Particular attention will be paid to the most significant linguistic phenomena in contemporary Russian, as well as to the in-depth lexico-stylistic text analysis with application of the advanced knowledge of semantics, pragmatics and stylistics acquired at the first and second year of study.

The theoretical part of the course also includes written and oral language exercises (практический курс - 36 hours). These latter represent an integral part of the course and are designed to help students develop their dialogical (oral) and compositional (written) skills at a C1 - C2 level regarding the subjects under study. The practical part of the course students will work on the vocabulary and phraseology pertinent to the texts being studied. Some examples of written and oral translation from Italian to Russian will be proposed.

Teaching methods

Analytical and communicative methods.

Lectures on theoretical topics; seminars including practical text analysis, with interactive communication and group presentations based on theindicated scientific works.

Assessment methods

Final assessment consists of several parts: an oral presentation prepared during the course (for attending students)/ an oral exam for non-attending students and a written exam as well as the exams related to the practical course (lettorato). The written and oral linguistic competence will be evaluated together with the competence in the field of textual analysis.

The written exam (4 hours) consists of a theoretical question and lexico-stylistic text analysis to be carried out with the help of monolingual dictionaries. The written exam result is valid for four exam sessions.

For the oral exam, attending students will have to choose and prepare a group presentation on a particular subject during the course. The subject chosen has to be aggreed upon with the teacher.

Non-attending students have to take an oral examination based on the theoretical subjects covered during the course.

The final mark to be put on record is an average of marks obtained in both written and oral exams including the language test related to the practical course (lettorato).

NB: To pass the Russian Linguistics 2 exam, students should have already passed Russian Linguistics 1.
