Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student knows the main lines of historical development of sport and culture produced, by the sport in different ages and social contexts.

Course contents

The course will be focused on two topics:

  1. The main aspects of body culture, through its representations and meanings concerning educational models. In other words, the shape of the body is a cultural indicator of ideologies and changes, of which sport is an emblematic frame.

  2. The origin and development of modern sport in Europe. A special attention will be dedicated to its cultural, social and political implications, as well as to the process of internationalisation (International Olympic Committee, international federations and mega-events).

Assessment methods

The final assessment will be a paper concerning a topic discussed in class or proposed by the student in accordance with the teacher. Class participation will be considered.
