Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student is able to recognize the methodological and interpretative elements of historical research in the field of studies on war and peace cultures. He has full awareness of historical sources for the history of war and peace cultures, he is able to compare and analyse different document types, and he is able to recognize the role of memory in contemporary culture. He is able to disclose critically and consciously the results of historical research on the theme of war and peace cultures.

Course contents

Title: War and Peace from World War I to World War II. The Italian Case.

Moving from the analysis of George Mosse on the myth of the fallen soldiers and of the myth of war experience in WWI, the course focuses on the age during which the 'ethics of war' prevails on the 'ethics of peace' and on Italy as a case-study.

The course consists in lectures held by prof. Gagliani which will discuss historiographical themes and concepts and methodology elements and in two seminars (attending students have to choose one seminar):

1. Dianella Gagliani, Italian Fascism as a culture of war

The seminar focuses on the origins of Fascism and on its evolution during the Twenties and the Thirties, on its colonial wars and Empire and on its participation in WWII till the experience of the Italian social republic.

Students have to attend the lessons regurarly. At the end of the seminar attending students will write  a paper (ca. 10 pages/15-20.000 signs) on one of the discussed topics.

2. Roberta Mira, Italy 1943-1945

The seminar focuses on Nazi occupation of Italy, war violence and massacres, deportation, Resistance movements (civil resistance and armed resistance), the legacy of war, Resistance and Fascism in the aftermath of WWII.

Students have to attend the lessons regurarly. At the end of the seminar attending students will write a paper (ca. 10 pages/15-20.000 signs) on one of the discussed topics.

Assessment methods

Attending students:

Attending students have to write a paper on a topic planned with one of the professors and chosen among the themes of the course (paper lenght: about 15-20.000 signs). Bibliography and sources will be selected together by the student and the professor.

Deadline to hand in the papers: June, 3 2019. Students will hand in the papers via e-mail to the professor they chose. First exam date will be on June, 11 2019.

Exams dates will be published on professor Gagliani's webpage (see 'Avvisi') and on AlmaEsami. There are no extraordinary dates.

To register for the exam please use AlmaEsami. It is possible to register after each exam date for the next one. Pay attention to the deadline: registration closes 10 days before the exam. Please check the deadline on AlmaEsami.

On the exam day students have to hand in a printed copy of their paper.

Detailed information on the paper will be given during the lessons.

The paper will verify the capability to:

- elaborate the information and knowledge acquired during the lessons
- elaborate the information and knowledge acquired by means of readings and sources
- carry out a brief historical research
- write a historical paper following scientific criteria and method.

 

Non-Attending Students:

The oral exam will verify:

- the knowledge of the themes which have been discussed during the lessons

- the capability to establish connections between historical events

- the capability to understand the readings suggested and to notice and discuss their core topics and historical questions

- the capability to compare readings.

A deep and precise knowledge of the themes of the course, together with good capability of discriminating analysis and the mastery of a specific language will be evaluated with excellence grades.

A mechanical and non-articulate knowledge of the themes of the course, together with a correct but not always appropriate language will be evaluated with decent grades.

Weaknesses in the capability of analysis and inappropriate language, together with a weak knowledge of the themes of the course, will be evaluated with barely passing grades.

ATTENTION - The last exam date for attending students is on May 2020. Afterwards they will be considered as non-attending students and will study the entire program.

Erasmus and international students Students must show up within three days from the beginning of the lessons (1st, 2nd and 3rd lesson) to enroll in the course. Otherwise they will not be admitted to the final exam.

Erasmus and international students have to study the same program as Italian students. Also assessment methods are the same.
