Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student: - knows the methodologies of the multifactorial investigation of the development and of the alterations of the emotions; - knows the clinical criteria and diagnostic tools in the assessment of discomfort and emotional disorder; - knows and is able to apply the techniques for the personalized treatment of emotional disorders.

Course contents

Development of the emotional system and of the emotional regulation system.

Psychology and psychopathology of emotions.

Fear and anxiety disorder.

Sadness, joy and mood disorders.

Shame and pride and eating behavior disorders.

Anger, aggression and personality disorders.

Emotional dysfunction and psychotic disorders.

Integrated treatments.

Psychiatric legislation, involuntary treatments.

Organization of the DSM-DP and role of the psychologist.

Teaching methods

Frontal lessons and seminar activities.
Discussion of video-recorded example clinical cases.

Assessment methods

Oral exam which usually includes 3 questions: one on a psychopathological topic, another on a clinical topic (description of the clinical picture, elements for the differential diagnosis, treatment options) and the third on the organization of mental health services in Italy. Each question can be evaluated with a score from 0 to 10 that takes into account the correctness and completeness of the answer. The sum of the scores of the individual questions constitutes the final grade.

Teaching tools

Presentations of the lessons in PowerPoint. Material provided during lectures and in-depth meetings. The material is available to students and can be downloaded from a dedicated online space.
