Learning outcomes

The course will allow the student to learn and use effectively the main tools for bibliographic research and documentation concerning classical literary and documentary sources and their reception (textual and bibliographic databases, digital libraries and repositories). The student will also learn to assemble a thematic bibliography and to apply the newly acquired skills to other fields related to the cultural heritage.

Course contents

This is a specialistic, seminar-based course. A pre-requisite for attending the course is a basic knowledge of Greek or Latin language and civilisation.

A. Description, methodology and guide to the use of traditional digital tools for bibliographic research and hypertextual reading of classical literary sources:

B. Classical literature bibliograhy, its tradition, and persistence from antiquity to the modern and contemporary period.

C. Case studies (authors and themes of classical literature)

Teaching methods

A dedicated e-learning platform will offer hypertextual and digital resources, exercises and activities prepared by the lecturer, as well as cooperative tools (forum, chat, blog, wiki).

Assessment methods

Each student will prepare a bibliographic essay on a Greek or Latin author, or on a theme related to classical tradition. The essay will be submitted one week before the date of the examination.

The examination will consist of an oral exam that will include a discussion of the essay, as well as the course topics, a critical discussion of the suggested bibliography, texts, and other multimedia materials on the e-learning platform.

The mark will be assigned as pass (18/30-23/30), merit (24/30-27/30) and distinctions (28/30 e 30/30), taking into account all aspects of the examination.

Teaching tools

During the class lectures the texts and databases will be projected through a network pc. On the e-learning platform the student will find, in addition to the multimedia handouts:

  • forum through which the students can communicate among them and with the lecturer (this tool is recommended over the e-mail);
  • blog to update class notes and ideas.
  • chat for short discussions, infromation, etc.
