Learning outcomes

The objective of the course is to familiarise students with some of the main demographic trends and problems related to the relationship between demographic trends and economic development.  Moreover, the course refer to demographic techniques and their applications in business.

Course contents

Concepts, definitions international data sources of demographic and socio-economic data;

- Theories on the relationship between demographic trends and development;

Multidimensional poverty measures

- The world's distribution of wealth: poverty and inequality;

Poverty and inequality in Europe and in Italy. Poverty and social exclusion in Europe. Household’ poverty in Italy

Poverty and inequality in developing countries.

Development indicators

Demographic trends and consumer behaviour.

For Scienze Politiche students

- Demography and social change in the Mediterranean area;

- Population problems in developing countries. Case studies: Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, China, India.

International conferences on population; Millennium Development Goals; Sustainable Development Goals

-United Nation hypothesis on future demographic trends;

For Scienze Statistiche students

- Application of demographic methods to business organizations.

- Demographic techniques for enterprises analysis: life tables, cohort analysis, standardization.

Teaching methods

Frontal lessons; discussion of arguments that the students can deepen.

Assessment methods

Oral examination. Oral examination includes students' work too.
To support assesment, the student must enroll via electronic bulletin board in accordance with mandatory deadlines. If the student fails to enroll by the due date he must communicate, before the official closing of the lists, the problem to the teacher who will place him in the list.
