Learning outcomes

Basic notions for understanding the functioning of natural and forest ecosystems. Tools for the analysis of forest stands in its different aspects.

Operational tools for:

- management of forest resources at different scales;

- planning and achievement of interventions for environmental reclamation;

- planning and achievement of forestation and reforestation.

Course contents

Forest biology: tree growth and its interactions with environment, reproduction, physiological reactions to cutting and pruning. Forest ecology: populations, communities and ecosystems.

Relationships between forest and environment: local and general effects. Humus and forest soils. Analisys of forest stands. Forest functions.

National and regional woods and forests: definitions, characteristics of forest species and of their communities. Anthropic influence on forests: sylvicultural techniques and their effects on forest stands, introduction to logging methods. Management of forest resources, interactions of sylviculture, wildlife and landscape conservation. Multi-purpose forestry management. Forest degradation and recovery. Engineering properties of vegetation. Ecological principles for vegetation establishment and maintenance. Reclamation, revegetation and reforestation techniques.

The course is based on frontal lesson, integrated with audiovisuals and completed with forest outings for practise.

Assessment methods

Oral test aiming at verifying the basic knowledge acquired and the interventions applied.
