Learning outcomes

After completing the course students will achieve a critical awareness in the field of historical knowledge and specifically in the area of Greek History. They are able to use the basic tools for research; also they acquire the critical knowledge of the issues and the most important problems related to Greek history from its origins to the Hellenistic age and reading documents and sources.

Course contents

1. Introduction to the study of Greek history. History and historiography. Research tools.
2. Specific research subject: Greek democracy in Fifth Century B.C.: Pericles
3. Greek History from its origins to the Roman conquest.
Seminars will be held on the main political and military institutions of Athens and other Greek poleis.

Classes begin wednesday 7 February, 2018, h.13 (Aula Tibiletti, Via Zamboni, 38).

1.Introduction: R.Vattuone, Historíe. Lezioni introduttive al corso di Storia greca, Bologna, Pàtron 2006.

2.About specific research subject: texts and slides will be delivered at the end of the course. Must also be read: R.Vattuone, Pericle, Bologna, Il Mulino 2017.

3. Outlines of Ancient Greek History  will be studied on university level Handbooks (for instance:  C.Bearzot, Manuale di Storia greca, Il Mulino, Bologna 2015).

Teaching methods

The courses will take place in an interactive way to encourage students' skills and develop personal research itineraries. Specific considerations will be carried out on methodology and research tools. Translations from greek text will be carried out by students. They will be held series of seminars on political institutions and on interesting Greek historical inscriptions.

Assessment methods

Tests on: Greeh History Handbook. Reading, translation and historical commentary of the sources. Special attention will be paid about students' ability to understand and translate the text, to use critical methodology in the field.

In the oral exam questions will be aimed at testing the student's ability in exposing with an appropriate language issues rising from the teaching material, as well as his/her skills in making connections between different texts in order to build an argument.

Proper language and the ability to critically speak about the original texts and books' content will lead to a good/excellent final grade

Acceptable language and the ability to resume the books' content and class discussion on the original sources will lead to a sufficient/fair grade.

Insufficient linguistic proficiency and fragmentary knowledge of the books' content and class discussion on the original sources will lead to a failure in passing the exam.
