70800 - Circadian Rhythms Physiology

Academic Year 2013/2014

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Medicine and Surgery (cod. 8415)

Learning outcomes

- To learn and understand the basics of circadian rhythm physiology at different levels of integration. In particular, lessons will cover molecular and cellular clock mechanisms, cardiovascular, endocrine, and metabolic rhythms, and behavioral integration operated by the central nervous system.
- To employ and understand the technical vocabulary of basic chronobiology.
- To improve the ability to acquire and understand multidisciplinary information spanning different clinical fields and basic science in order to provide patients with optimal care.

Course contents

Principles, techniques, and vocabulary of chronobiology

Molecular, cellular, and tissue mechanisms of circadian oscillators

Relationships between the wake-sleep cycle and circadian rhythms

Physiological circadian rhythms of body temperature, cardiovascular variables, and hormone secretion
